After a series of ups and downs, Samsung Electronics finally gave in to make Value Pack for all Samsung Galaxy S users. Here we will see the detail procedure on how to update a new firmware in Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000. This new firmware known as XXJVU 2.3.6 is a global leaked version that comes with a number of added features and enhancements which we will be checking out in a while. This new firmware is not a completely stable pack but is a beta version of the Value Pack that got leaked. This new firmware lets us enjoy precise features like Face unlock of Galaxy Nexus and also improves the smartphone’s performance.
Samsung has already announced that it will be launching the official Value Pack very soon. As this is not the official firmware release, you will have to use the Odin tool to update this firmware. You do not require to root your device in order to apply this update and if you have already rooted your device from before, then after applying this update the rooting access will be revoked again.
We wont be responsible for any harm caused to your device during the updation procedure that is unlikely to happen if you follow the instructions carefully. The updation procedure is not recommended for basic users but is for advanced users and is only applicable to Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 smartphones that are network unlocked. Do not apply it in similar phone model numbers like I9000B or I9000T or in any other device as it might not be reversible and may harm the device by blocking it.
Lets take a look at some of the features that come with this custom ROM:
- Face Unlock from Galaxy Nexus
- Galaxy S2 Photo Editor
- Improved Camera App
- Ability to take picture while taking videos
- New Lockscreen sounds
- Galaxy Note Lockscreen
- Smoother and faster Gallery 3D
- Minor changes in the UI
- Fast auto-rotation response
- Enhanced stock browser
- Higher FPS rate in 3D
You must backup all the user data present in your phone since chances of data loss or corruption are there. Having a backup can help you replace the lost data if any damage occurs. Do not use KIES PC Suite to back up the data because it wont recognize KIES after firmware update as this is the beta version. Follow the link posted below to backup and restore all your data easily.
Steps to Update Value Pack for Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000:
Step-1: Enable USB Debugging from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”.
Download Odin3 v1.83 followed by Gingerbread 2.3.6 Value Pack files from the Must Have section to the computer and extract it. Match the extracted files with the image given below and if a single file is found missing then check with the extraction or downloading process. The size of the downloaded file must be 226 MB.
Step-2: Open Odin in your computer and power off your phone to enter your device into Download mode by pressing Volume Down Key + OK button and holding both press Power button simultaneously. Once you enter into download mode connect your phone to the computer via USB Cable while keeping the ODIN opened.
Step-3: Now the drivers will get installed and ID: COM will turn yellow indicating that you can now proceed to the next step. It may take 3-4mins for the ID:COM block to install all the drivers hence wait till the process completes. Dont proceed to the next step if the ID:COM block doesn’t turn yellow.
In case the ID: COM doesn’t turn yellow then you need to install Samsung USB Drivers, .NET Framework and update KIES with the latest version so that the missing drivers get installed.
Step-4: In Odin click on the corresponding tabs and select the files as mentioned below
PIT – s1_odin_20100512.pit,
PDA – CODE_I9000XXJVU_CL851880_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5
Phone – MODEM_I9000XXJVU_REV_00_CL1092175.tar.md5
CSC - GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVU.tar.md5
Be sure to untick the “Re-partition option else your phone might get bricked.
Step-5: Double check the selected files and tap on “Start” to begin the updation process. It will take around 10mins for the updation to complete and once updation is done, the device will reboot. As soon as you see the home screen in your phone, remove the connected USB Cable and power off your phone to enter into recovery mode. The Recovery Mode can be entered by pressing Volume Down Key + OK button and holding both press Power button simultaneously.
Step-6: In the recovery mode, choose “Wipe data/factory reset” > “Wipe Cache partition” then “Clear Dalvik Cache”. Now reboot your device by selecting the option of ”Reboot system now” with the help of Volume rocker keys. Now choose “++++ Go Back ++++” then press power button on the option of “Reboot system now” to restart the device.
If you are unable to access the internet after the firmware update then you have to re configure the APN Settings from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names”. You can now restore back all your data that you had previously taken a back up of and in case you face any issues during the firmware updation process or if the process gets interrupted somewhere in the middle then, you have to reapply the entire procedure again from the beginning.
Thus you can easily update your Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 smartphone with the latest Value Pack of Gingerbread 2.3.6 Firmware of XXJVU build by following the steps mentioned above carefully. You can check the current firmware from the path “Settings > About Phone > Firmware Version” where you will discover the current firmware as 2.3.6 XXJVU.
