Steps to Update Motorola Droid with Android 4.0 Alpha Build:

Step-1: Download Android 4.0.3 ICS Package from the Must Have section to your computer. Connect the smartphone via original USB Cable obtained at purchase time and copy the downloaded zip file to your phone’ SD Card without renaming or modifying it. Enable USB Debugging from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging”

Step-2: After copying is done, remove the connected USB Cable and power off your phone to enter into Recovery mode. To enter into Recovery mode hold “X” on the physical keyboard then press Power button to turn on the phone. You can let go of the Power button if you want to, but do not let go of X button. An exclamation mark icon will be displayed on the screen and you can let go of the X button now. You can access Recovery mode from exclamation mark icon by pressing the Volume up button and then press Camera button.

Step-3: In Recovery mode choose choose “Clear storage” to clear all data present in phone. Now choose “Install zip from SD Card” > “Choose zip from SD Card” then select the ICS zip file placed in your phone. After selecting the file it will take 10-15mins to complete the process of firmware updation. Do not restart or interrupt during the process of firmware updation or it might make the device unstable.

Step-4: After the process is over choose the option of “++++Go Back++++” then select “Reboot system now” option to restart the device normally. Since this is the first boot, it may take more than the usual time to turn on the device. In case the device reboots continuously, or if the process gets interrupted somewhere in between, you have to re follow the entire process again from the beginning.
