You must backup all the user data present in your phone since chances of data loss or corruption are there. Having a backup can help you replace the lost data if any damage occurs. Do not use HTC Sync to back up data after the update because it may or may not recognize the phone after the update since it is a alpha release. Follow the link posted below to backup and restore all your data easily.
Steps to Update Ice Cream Sense Custom ROM in HTC Evo 4G:
Step-1: Download ICS Custom ROM 4.0 Package from the Must Have section to your computer and connect your smartphone to the computer via original USB Cable obtained at purchase time. Copy the downloaded zip file to your phone’s SD Card and make sure not to place the file deep into any sub-folders.
Step-2: After copying is over, disconnect the USB Cable and enable USB Debugging from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. Make sure to tick the option of USB Debugging.
Now enter the device into Boot loader mode by pressing the Volume up key + OK button and holding both press Power button simultaneously . If the device boots into Normal mode then re-try to enter into Boot loader Mode by the same process till you are finally there.
Step-3: In Boot loader mode choose the option of “Recovery” to enter the device into Recovery mode. In Recovery mode select “install zip from SD Card” > “choose zip from SD Card” then choose the Ice Cream Sense Custom ROM Zip file placed in your phone. As soon as you select the file it will take around 5 minutes to apply the update.
Step-4: After the firmware is successfully updated, the device will rebooted or will land up in Recovery screen again. In Recovery mode screen select the option of “++++ Go Back ++++” > “Reboot system now” to reboot the phone. You can restore back all the data that you had previously taken a backup of and also reconfigure the apn settings to access internet and other crucial data.
To confirm whether the firmware has been successfully updated or not, navigate to the path Settings >About Phone > Firmware Version where you will discover the firmware version as ICS Android 4.0.
