The updation procedure is only applicable to Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 smartphones that are network unlocked so do not try it in any other devices as it might not be reversible and will harm the device by blocking it.

You must backup all the user data present in your phone since chances of data loss or corruption are there. Having a backup can help you replace the lost data if any damage occurs. Do not back up the data via PC Suites as it may or may not detect the device after the update. Follow the link posted below to backup and restore all your data easily.
Steps to Update Galaxy S with ICS RC2 Firmware:
Step-1: Download Android 4.0.3 RC2.1 Package from the Must Have section to your computer. Connect the smartphone via original USB Cable obtained at purchase time and copy the downloaded zip file to your phone’s SD Card without renaming or modifying it. After copying is over, remove the connected USB Cable.
Step-2: Power off your phone to enter into Recovery mode by pressing Volume down key + OK button and holding both press Power button simultaneously. In Recovery mode choose “Wipe data/Factory reset” then “Wipe Cache partition” to clear all cache data present in phone.
You can check out the video posted below to know more on how to enter into Recovery mode.
Step-3: In Recovery mode choose ”Install zip from SD Card” > “Choose zip from SD Card” then select the ICS Android 4.0 Zip file placed in your phone. It will take about 20mins for the whole updation process to complete. After the updation process is complete, you will again land up in Recovery mode. Now choose “++++Go Back++++” then “Reboot system now” option to reboot the phone.
If your phone continuously restarts on its own, repeat the whole procedure again from the beginning. If you are facing problems regarding Wi Fi then you ought to install the Kernel fix and apply this Kernel so as to fix the issue. Thus you can easily update your Galaxy S with RC2.1 Android 4.o firmware by following the above mentioned steps.
