Before proceeding into the updation instructions make sure that you are on XXJVU Firmware. You need to update your smartphone to XXJVU Firmware and then root it on that firmware. Follow the links posted below to root your Galaxy S on XXJVU Firmware.
Enable USB Debugging in your phone from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging. Make sure that USB Debugging option is ticked
Step-1: Download Build 16 Android 4.0.3 Package followed by Google Apps Face Unlock and Google Apps Fixer Package from the Must Have section to your computer and connect your smartphone to the computer via original USB Cable obtained at purchase time. Copy the downloaded zip file to your phone’s SD Card. Make sure not to place the downloaded zip file deep into any sub-folders else the phone wont be able to detect it when required.
Step-2: After copying is over, remove the connected USB Cable and enter the device into Recovery mode by pressing Volume Up Key + OK button and holding both press Power button simultaneously. Step-3: Next select “install zip from SD Card” > “choose zip from SD Card” and choose Build 16 ICS Android 4.0.3 Firmware Zip Package, Google Apps with Face Unlock and Google Apps Fixer Package in the same order as mentioned here sequentially one after another. It will take around 10 minutes to process all these three files.
Step-4: Now select “++++ Go Back ++++” > “Reboot system now” option to reboot the phone. After all the files are processed, the device will again boot up in Recovery mode and it will take about 20 minutes to update the device. In recovery mode select “Wipe data/factory reset” > “Wipe Cache partition” to clear all cache. Now select “++++ Go Back ++++” > “Reboot system now” to restart Galaxy S GT I9000 smartphone.
