All thanks to an all new update of Ice Cream Sandwich android 4.0.1 being rolled out, you can get a new update for Galaxy S2 I9100. This new firmware update of XXKP2 is the successor of its recent predecessor version of XXKP1. It is to be noted that this is not the Official Samsung release and it will reckon the custom Counter that in turn will void the warranty.
You do not require to root your phone to apply this update but if your phone is already rooted from before, the rooting access will be revoked after the update is applied and thus you can claim back the warranty.

Do not use KIES to back up data since you won’t be able to use KIES after the update as Samsung hasn’t rolled out the support for Galaxy S2 on 4.0 Firmware. Steps to Update ICS Android 4.0.1 XXKP2 Firmware in Galaxy S2:
Step-1: Download ICS Android 4.0.1 XXKP2 Zip Package from the Must Have section to your computer, unzip it and place it on the desktop for easy accessibility. During the extraction process you will be prompted to enter a password so give the password as Coveringandroid.com
Step-2: After the files are successfully extracted match them with the image given below and if a single file is found missing, download the zip file again.
Step-3: Open Odin .exe from the extracted files and power Off your phone to enter your device into Download mode by pressing the Volume Down Key + (OK)Center button and holding both press Power button simultaneously.
Step-4: Once you enter into download mode connect your phone to the computer via USB Cable while keeping the ODIN opened. Now the drivers will get installed and ID: COM will turn yellow indicating that you can now proceed to the next step. It may take 3-4mins for the ID:COM block to install all the drivers hence wait till the process completes. Dont proceed to the next step if the ID:COM block doesn’t turn yellow.
Step-5: Click on the respective tabs in Odin and select the respective files from the extracted folder.

Step-6: Now click on Start. The firmware updation process will start and after the firmware is updated, your phone will restart on its own. It will take up to 10mins for the updation process to complete. In case the process fails or you gets stuck somewhere in the middle even after 15mins, pull out the USB, re-insert the battery and re-try the entire process again from the beginning.
Step-7: Disconnect the USB Cable, Power off the phone and enter into Download mode. Connect the phone again to the computer while keeping the Odin opened and select the file mentioned below. Do not choose any other file in any other option.

Step-8: After the update is successfully applied, the device will restart and you will be prompted to enter your google account credentials to get access to Google powered Applications with Wi-Fi or 3G Settings. To confirm whether the firmware has been successfully updated or not, go to the path “Applications > Settings > About Phone” where you will discover the firmware version as ICS Android 4.0.1. If the version is different, then you have to apply the firmware updation process again.
Step-9: If you are facing problems related to force close errors then, turn Off your phone and enter into Recovery mode by pressing Volume Down key + OK Button and holding both press Power button simultaneously. If the phone boots normally then repeat the button combination till you enter into Recovery mode. Now choose “Wipe data/ Factory reset” then choose “Wipe Cache partition” and reboot your device by clicking on “Reboot system now” option.
Thus by following the above simple steps you can easily update your Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 with ICS Android 4.0.1 XXKP2 firmware. If you are interrupted during the firmware updation process, you will have to reapply the whole process again from the beginning.
