Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Galaxy S II was supposed to release on March 10th but it turned out to be just an air-blown rumor. Next a tweet was pulled off by SK Telecom announcing ICS to arrive on March 13 since Samsung wanted to make the official announcement and today the Samsung Galaxy S II ICS update chronicle has finally come to an end. Samsung has finally given an answer to the much hyped question “When will Galaxy S II receive the Android 4.0 update?”
The answer is right now in South Korea, Poland, Hungary and Sweden. Samsung announced the good news today via their Twitter and Facebook accounts, informing the world that the updates are presently hitting Poland, Hungary, Sweden in addition to Korea. These are the first markets to receive the update, and it is expected to gradually roll out for other countries as well subject to the carrier requirements. While European and Asian users with the GSM Galaxy S II can expect to see the update prompt in the coming days, United States users may receive the update late because of hardware differences existing in the US version smartphones compared to the European version.
Additional devices to receive the ICS update include Galaxy Note, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 but no specific time frame could be given as to when will they get the update and other older devices wont be receiving Android 4.0 update. Samsung has also stated that they will offer Android 2.3 Gingerbread firmware upgrades for Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab 7″, Galaxy S Plus, Galaxy S SCL(Super Clear LCD), and Galaxy W towards March end. The firmware upgrades for Galaxy S will include Face Unlock, Snapshot, Photo Editor and many more.
The Android 4.0 ICS update will be available for international version of Galaxy GT-i9100 via FOTA or KIES 2.0. Those of you using KIES make sure that it is updated to the latest version because even KIES 1.5 wont support Android ICS upgrade. Users opting for FOTA, need to download some heavy duty file to your mobile that would require a strong Wi-Fi or internet connection. Thus we recommend users to upgrade their devices through KIES instead. You also require sufficient
memory to install the update. those of you who are upgrading via Kies require 60MB internal memory and FOTA users require a minimum of 350MB.
You can delete the unwanted applications and check for memory by navigating to Applications->Setting -> Storage -> Device memory -> Available space and don’t forget to backup your data before upgrading. Android 4.0 ICS will include some major improvements in your devices that are:
- Addition of Mobile Network Data usage function
- Enhanced usability of multi-tasking and some applications
- Addition of Face Unlock and Android Beam
Adobe flash and Bluetooth 3.0 HS will not be supported, only Bluetooth 3.0 will be supported and Samsung has confirmed that Android 4.0 update will arrive in Israel on March 15. As quoted by JK Shin, President of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics
We expect that our customers will enjoy an enhanced experience with their GALAXY device through this upgrade. Samsung
is committed to satisfying our customer needs
The availability and scheduling of software upgrades and specific models upgradable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and wireless carrier’s requirements. So what are we waiting for let’s lick on some Ice Cream this summer.
