Unfortunately we don’t have the exact change logs that this new Android 4.0.3 firmware comes with. You need to root your
Galaxy S to apply this update and rooting will void your warranty. The only way to reclaim back the lost warranty is to re-apply the default or factory firmware again.

Steps to Update Build 17 Android 4.0.3 Firmware in Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000:
Before proceeding into the updation instructions make sure that you are on XXJVU Firmware. You need to update your smartphone to XXJVU Firmware and then root it on that firmware. Follow the links posted below to root your Galaxy S on XXJVU Firmware.
Enable USB Debugging in your phone from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging. Make sure that USB Debugging option is ticked
Step-1: Download Build 17 Android 4.0.3 Package followed by Google Apps and Google Apps Fixer Package from the Must Have section to your computer. Connect your smartphone to the computer via original USB Cable obtained at purchase time and copy the downloaded zip files to your phone’s SD Card. Do not place the downloaded files deep into any sub-folders else the phone wont be able to detect it when required.
Step-2: After copying is over, remove the connected USB Cable and enter the device into Recovery mode by pressing Volume Up button + Menu key and holding both press Power button simultaneously. In Recovery mode choose the options of “Wipe data/factory reset” > “Wipe Cache partition” to clear all cache present in the device.
Step-3: Next select “install zip from SD Card” > “choose zip from SD Card” and choose Build 17 ICS Android 4.0.3 Firmware Zip Package, Google Apps and Google Apps Fixer Package in the same order as mentioned here, sequentially one after another. It will take around 10 minutes to process all these three files.
Step-4: After the firmware is successfully updated, either the phone will restart or will land up in Recovery mode screen. If you land in Recovery mode screen select “++++ Go Back ++++” > “Reboot system now” options to reboot the phone.
Step-5: When you see the home screen, power off the device and re-insert the battery. Now boot your device in Recovery mode again. In recovery mode select “Wipe data/factory reset” > “Wipe Cache partition” to clear all cache. Next select “++++ Go Back ++++” > “Reboot system now” to restart the Galaxy S GT I9000 smartphone.
In case the process is interrupted somewhere in the middle then you have to repeat the entire procedure again from the beginning so as to successfully update the phone. Thus you can easily update your Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 smartphone with the latest Build 17 Android 4.0.3 firmware by following the steps
