How To Root Samsung Stratosphere on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread

The recently released Samsung Stratosphere running on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread can now be rooted. Intresting aint it????  The device sports a 4-inch Amoled dislay, a 5-megapixel rear shooter with auto flash and focus and is powered by a single-core 1GHz processor. Shipped with Verizon as expected it comes with a contract price of $149.99.

Pre-Requisites:

You need the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) toolkit to debug your Stratosphere, so download ADB from here  and install it. Windows users need to install the C++ redistributables also,  for the Heimdall tool described in the first step to work. Keep a backup of all the user data in your phone so that you can restore it in case any data gets corrupted or is lost during the rooting procedure. Must Have:

Heimdall 1.3.1 Stratosphere Root.zip fileStock-Kernel.zip file

Steps To Root Samsung Stratosphere:

Step-1: Download the .zip file of Heimdall 1.3.1.  Heimdall is an open source tool for flashing firmware on Galaxy S-based devices such as Stratosphere. It is a better option than ODIN since it works on Windows/OS X/Linux. After downloading the .zip file, extract its contents using the 7-zip software.

Step-2: Boot your into Download Mode. To do this first turn off your phone. Next power it on while holding the Volume Down button.

Step-3: Now your device will say Download Mode Do Not Turn Off Target. At this instance connect your phone to your computer using USB cable.

For Windows users, after the above step,  go to the folder extracted in Step 1 > Drivers  > zagig.exe. You need to setup drivers using this. Click on Install Driver when it asks then, replug your phone. Reboot your computer if needed.

Step-4: You need to download Stratosphere Root.zip file and Stock Kernel.zip file. Extract their contents and keep them in the same folder used earlier for the extraction of Heimdall in Step 1

Step-5: Open a terminal window that is Command Prompt in case of Windows, go to the extraction  folder in Step 1 and type heimdall detect. Once your device is detected, type heimdall flash-kernel root-zimage. A custom kernel will now flash on your device and it will reboot showcasing a yellow traingle symbol.

Step-6: Go to Settings > Applications > Development to enable USB Debugging.

Step-7: Check if your device is detected and attached to the computer:

Now remount your file  system:

F:\Downloads\heimdall-suite-1.3.1-win32>adb remount

Remount succeeded

Step-8: Push the files below to your phone:

F:\Downloads\heimdall-suite-1.3.1-win32>adb push su /system/bin

F:\Downloads\heimdall-suite-1.3.1-win32>adb push busybox /system/bin

F:\Downloads\heimdall-suite-1.3.1-win32>adb push Superuser.apk/system/bin

Step-9: Finally change permissions for su and busybox:

F:\Downloads\heimdall-suite-1.3.1-win32>adb shell chmod 4755 /system/bin/su

F:\Downloads\heimdall-suite-1.3.1-win32>adb shell chmod 4755 /system/bin/busybox

We wont be responsible for any harm caused to your device during the rooting procedure that is unlikely to happen if you follow the instructions carefully. So get rooting and make the maximum use of all the privileges it offers
